IR beam-breakers are commonly used as a “gate” detector. Either a bar, slot or other IR-blocking mechanical device breaks the beam between the infrared emitter and detector, and the resulting signal is cleaned up and presented as a nice digital signal. It’s very quick too, and can be used to measure the pulses on slotted-disk tachometers.
