The FT232RL chip by FTDI is a pretty cool chip. With a minimum of components (mainly capacitors), you can plug this into a USB port, and have it make your device look like it’s a regular serial comm port device. This chip is used on many devices you plug into USB for microcontrollers, like PICAxes, Basic STAMPs, and Arduinos.
Yes, it is a SMD device, but it really isn’t that hard to solder. Really!
