Sumovore Brainboard - the PICAXE!

Dave Hrynkiw
November 5, 2008
It's been a bit long in the coming, but it's finally here: The Sumovore PICAXE Brainboard for the Solarbotics Sumovore! One of the biggest tripping points we see from going from the pure digital/analog  realm of BEAM to microcontrollers is learning the ins-and-outs of microcontrollers. The PICAXE nicely fills this void by offering a programming […]

Dave Hrynkiw
October 31, 2008
Hey, how about that! We've got some new gear motors to complement the popular Mini Metal Gear Motors (the GM11a, GM12a, GM13a, GM14a, GM18 and yes, even the mutant GM19). What's particularly new is that they have sealed cylindrical gearboxes! Same sort of gearing, but no funky rectangular shape - just a nice, sleek, clean […]

It's that wonderful time of year when you can see your breath in the air while you wait at the bus stop. Frost decorates the blades of grass, motorists spend five minutes scraping ice off the windshield  before departing and there are hints of snow when you look up at the hills. So what's a […]

Dave Hrynkiw
October 2, 2008
It's been in the coming for a while, and now is the time to release it to the webosphere (yes, I said "Web-o-sphere"). Since Solarbotics Ltd. took over HVW Technologies, we simply couldn't ignore some of the benefits of microcontrollers. Really, they're not that scary. Many of them even look like our good friend the […]

BEAM as part of thesis work

September 28, 2008
Rory Nugent (of Solar Xylophone fame) has posted his thesis presentation to the Interactive Telecommunications Program, which heavily features BEAM devices. By "building things with a sense of life", he's documenting what we've known for a good while - autonomous devices ("pets") offer unusual interesting relationships. Keep up the good work!

Telephone interruptions Scheduled

Dave Hrynkiw
September 18, 2008
Now why would we schedule interruptions? Umm... because it gives us time to enjoy a cookie and milk without the phone ringing. Every accidentally dip your headset mic into a glass of milk? It starts to smell funky in a day or two... Anyway, it isn't really our fault - it's just some local infrastructure […]
