Eccentric Cubicle
The geniuses behind MAKE Magazine found Canadian Kaden Harris - a builder of really neat things. What makes this book stand out is the way Mr. Harris shows you how to build his "Office Accessories from a Parallel Universe". With a wicked sense of humor much like that of our own author Dave Hrynkiw (Junkbots, Bugbots, and Bots on Wheels), his footnotes and construction tips make each project well worth reading carefully. After all, the back cover describes him as "On the ragged edge between art and the craftsmanship, he builds odd things that do stuff... or no, he builds things that do odd stuff...or, no...that's not it...um...er...OK...he builds things that do stuff oddly.". That about sums up his style!
The "Nano Projects" that feature techniques and mechanisms useful to the main projects are an excellent sub-read!
What exactly are the projects in the "Eccentric Cubicle"? Here's a short list:
- BallistaMail (fire paper balls from a medieval sling)
- DeskBeam Bass (make music with your work surface)
- iBlow Bubble machine (excellent for distracting coworkers while you raid their lunches)
- Haze-O-Matic 3000 Fog Machine ("Fog of war" in the office? Why not?)
With many, many useful tips per project, you'll come away from reading this with a different perspective on how, where, and why you should do your next project differently. It's that good. No B.S.
382 full colour pages with really good quality diagrams make reading this book a joy. DO NOT read it in bed, as you will easily stay up past your bedtime and be bleary-eyed at work. Good thing you have that Haze-O-Matic to hide behind while you nap at your desk...
